“Go design cool stuff.” These words inspire us each week as we spill out into our design studio to start the week. And the stuff IS cool. Design Research is a critical part of the design process. Design Researchers create deep empathy and generate insights to inspire the design teams and clients from discovery to validation.

Design Concepts is looking for a Senior Design Researcher to join our Design Insights and Strategy team in Madison, WI.

As a Senior Design Researcher, you will lead the following activities:

  • Primary research, both qualitative and quantitative, to understand users and influencers
  • Secondary/desk and trend research to support research and design projects
  • Designing field materials, analysis tools and other related documents that support research and analysis efforts
  • Conducting/moderating field research (domestically and internationally)
  • Analyzing and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data to generate actionable insights and design strategies
  • Communicating and presenting actionable and memorable research insights and recommendations
  • Collaborating with other members of Strategy team as well as designers, engineers, and prototyping specialists
  • Collaborating with other design team members to support idea generation, brainstorming, and concept development
  • Facilitating workshops and decision-making meetings to drive toward next steps

Other responsibilities:

  • Mentoring junior team members
  • Supporting proposal writing/responding to RFPs
  • Keeping up to date on the latest trends and news in design research, design, and the industries and clients we support
  • Sharing knowledge and insights with the Strategy team and broader organization
  • Other projects and support as needed

You are:

  • Curious about and inspired by the world around you

  • An excellent oral and written communicator and storyteller

  • Passionate about the details
  • Able to travel regionally, nationally, and internationally (sometimes for up to two weeks at a time)

You have:

  • 5+ years of professional experience in design research or other relevant fields such as market research
  • Expertise in qualitative (ethnography, etc.) research methods including designing screeners, protocols, questionnaires, and managing a recruit with little or no supervision
  • Outstanding analysis and synthesis, framework creation, and visualization talents
  • Outstanding oral and written communication and storytelling skills
  • Experience working in or with other stakeholders in new product development
  • Bachelors or Masters in anthropology, sociology, psychology, architecture, design, marketing or other similar fields
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel)

As a “plus”, you might also have these skills:

  • Project management experience
  • Experience with quantitative research methods (e.g. designing, managing, and analyzing results from online surveys; familiarity with survey software such as Qualtrics or Survey Monkey)
  • Proficiency in Adobe suite software (InDesign, Illustrator), including video production
  • Experience in a consulting environment
  • Experience in design research and/or design for health care/medical
