Product Designers work to develop de novo while embedded on product teams. They are responsible for the full product design lifecycle, from concept to launch. Product Designers are creative, thoughtful individuals with a strong aptitude for making, prototyping and producing best-in-class experiences, improving workflows and paying attention to fine-tuned details. They showcase a broad range of skills but have depth of knowledge in disciplines like participatory/usability research, interaction/visual design, and coding. Product Designers share a passion for honing technology to serve users first and foremost.
Design Strategist support the organization's acceleration activities, involving the identification of opportunities that typically emerge upstream of today's current health care landscape. Design Strategists support innovation and commercialization through focused, rapid efforts to describe, shape, interpret, prototype and evaluate nascent product, company or partnership ideas. Ultimately, the methods they employ which may include ethnographic research, subject matter interviews, and workshop facilitation surface shared understanding, inform investment strategy, and bring a vision into focus that addresses the needs of users and customers alongside business and technical requirements. Given the dynamic nature of the work at UPMC Enterprises, responsibilities of an individual Designer may not fall squarely within de novo or acceleration roles and may intertwine and fluctuate between these areas.
- Common Responsibilities (across all) Able to demonstrate the value of design strategy and (human-centered design (HCD), as a strong advocate for the approach within the larger organization Capable of working on large or complex projects (or multiple small/mid-size projects) while maintaining momentum and quality Builds appropriate project plans, goals and work plans to frame early-stage efforts in an actionable and relevant way Able to facilitate stakeholder sessions, user groups and participatory design sessions to capture ideas, feedback and requirements Delivers appropriate HCD deliverables to demonstrate findings, recommendations or strategy direction including wireframes, prototypes, research reports, personas or service models Operates largely independently with project direction from lead/supervisor direction once a week
- Product: Works on large-sized and complex projects with complete autonomy Chooses the right creative process and level of dependability for the customer Delivers top-quality, innovative cohesive deliverables that are customer-focused, simple, and intuitive Ability to work creatively around difficult resource and technical limitations Utilizes understanding of platforms and technologies to identify challenges in the design process and propose alternate solutions Influences the product roadmap from creative process through successful design creation Advocates for users, constantly considering their needs and wants Acts as mentor to other designers on assigned projects Uses human-centered design methods to frame and validate initial concepts, develop early-stage prototypes and iterate on developed solutions Provides appropriate human-centered design deliverables on assigned projects including wireframes, interaction guides, user interface guides, and detail documentation Facilitates user groups and design sessions to capture design requirements and feedback Demonstrated ability to work creatively around difficult design, resource, and technical limitations Implements new and improved design patterns, methods, and processes
- Strategy: Uses ethnographic design research methods to develop qualitative insights that impact projects, products, and strategy Understands and predict trends in health care IT and related or adjacent industries that are shaping the future of health care Conducts primary and secondary research to discover unknowns and to explore trends, perspectives, and applications in the field (including market research, stakeholder interviews, contextual inquiry/ ethnographic observation, etc.) Map findings of a new market area or topic including their historical and competitive landscape to develop a shared understanding of the territory, and to relate those findings back to UPMCs potential differentiation and/or synergies Identify robust opportunity areas and ideas or companies that warrant further investigation, and develop an action plan for how to capitalize on those pursuits Synthesize or communicate a unique perspective about how UPMC Enterprises might participate in a given territory/space/future, including potential ways to leverage existing portfolio companies in related ventures Tolerates ambiguous problem-solving Thrives in making the complex simple and digestible
- Bachelors degree in Human Centered Design (HCD) or related field (i.e., Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, Communication/Graphic Design, Cognitive Psychology, Interaction Design, Human Factors, etc.) required or comparable degree and/or experience
- Advanced degree preferred Masters Degree, industry experience in traditional or emerging design disciplines 2-3 years of professional experience
- Significant experience framing project goals and timelines in the face of uncertainty, including a demonstrated comfort level working with unfamiliar domains, delicate topics and complex problems
- Understands and applies detailed HCD principles and processes, including a detailed understanding of qualitative and quantitative research, analysis, and synthesis methods
- Can complete advanced HCD deliverables in several of the following specialty areas (ethnographic or contextual research, concept generation, prototyping, usability study, information architecture, interaction design, etc.)
- Is visually and verbally articulate; including the ability to lead interactive group development sessions
- Understands and applies UPMC/TDC values and code of conduct.
- Interacts with others in an open, honest, collaborative, and reliable manner
