The Customer Insights Research team in Microsoft’s Experiences + Devices (E+D) group discovers, describes, and predicts user behaviors for some of the most widely-used products in the world. The insights we develop impact the productive, personal, and cloud app experiences that reach every possible form factor.

As part of this mission, our team creates and operates research engines: continuous, efficient research efforts that can be applied to a multitude of research questions and topics. We provide expertise and centralized services and drive critical research experimentation to increase the efficiency, scale and impact of our research team.

Responsibilities

As part of this mission, our team creates and operates research engines: continuous, efficient research efforts that can be applied to a multitude of research questions and topics. We provide expertise and centralized services and drive critical research experimentation to increase the efficiency, scale and impact of our research team.

We are looking for a user researcher to join our Core Usability research engine, impact a wide range of products on and relating to Windows, and lead the way in new techniques and methods for user research.  Among other things, you will be primarily responsible for:

  • Planning and executing quantitative or mixed methods usability research studies and experiments to discover and apply insights to the design of Windows-based products.
  • Iterating best practices and setting an example of research excellence in Microsoft through experimentation in usability and attitudinal metrics, online research, scaled research tool use and development, hypothesis-driven design, and tracking of research impact.
  • Developing new and existing quantitative/mixed-methods research capabilities and partnering with cross-discipline stakeholders to drive experimentation as a platform within Microsoft.

You will join a diverse team of researchers with high visibility in the organization, a strong track record of results, and opportunities to research many different products and experiences, as well as to learn, develop, and grow as a researcher.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in an Engineering, Social Science, or other data- or research-centric field.
  • Experience with quantitative research methods, statistical analysis, experimental design, insight synthesis, and data visualization.
  • Industry experience advocating for the customer and effectively partnering with development teams to improve the user experience based on research results or customer feedback.
  • Passion for fundamentally translating ideas, needs, and requests into researchable questions in a rigorous and valid way.
  • Strong project management, organization, and planning skills with an attention to detail.
  • Highly polished written and verbal communication and presentation skills, including influencing teams making data-driven decisions.

Desirable:

  • An advanced degree in Human Computer Interaction, Human Factors, or related field.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill with qualitative usability methods, including observing, understanding, and synthesizing human behavior into insights, and driving the voice of the customer in product development.
  • Experience with technical approaches to data acquisition including automation, tool development, and/or telemetry instrumentation.
