Overview

SPONSORED SESSION PRESENTED BY NATION

This session brings together qualitative researchers exploring the new demands of our profession in the era of GenAI. Focusing on the evolving relationship between global users and GenAI technologies, they will explore how we can shift the prevailing approach to ‘localization’, going beyond translation to true culturisation that considers local contexts, systems of knowledge, and modes of interaction. They will also discuss reflexive and critical lenses for GenAI research across cultures, including an understanding of its anglocentric training and frequent misreadings of cultural nuances.

Speakers

Adri Reksodipoetro

Adri Reksodipoetro is the Managing Director of Nation, a qualitative research firm delivering fresh, authentic perspectives on Asia and the Emerging World. For almost a decade he has helped Google localize Search, Assistant, and now Gemini in Southeast Asia, each requiring deep insight into how people process information through the lens of their local context and cultural frameworks.

Chris Golias

Chris Golias is a technology anthropologist currently investigating internationalization and localization for Google DeepMind’s Gen AI model, Gemini. He has conducted applied anthropological research across topics like climate, language quality, cultural relevance, AI, ecological design, consumer apps, healthcare, indigenous rights and substance use. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
